Cookie and Advertising Disclosure

1. What Are Cookies and Similar Technologies?

Cookies are small text files that a website asks your browser to store, usually to remember information between visits. The phrase “similar technologies” covers your browser’s local storage, which this website also uses. Both are small pieces of data kept in your browser, so this Disclosure describes them together.

2. Strictly Necessary: Browser Local Storage

ScanMe Online stores the following in your browser’s local storage. This data stays on your device. We do not collect it or store it on our servers.

If you sign in to an optional ScanMe account, Google Firebase Authentication additionally keeps your sign-in session in browser storage (IndexedDB). This is strictly necessary for staying signed in, exists only after you choose to sign in, and is removed when you sign out.

What we store locally:

• Theme preference (scanme-theme). Remembers whether you chose light, dark, or system appearance.
• Scan and generation history (scanme_history). The QR codes and barcodes you generated or scanned in this browser, up to the most recent 100 items, so the History page can show them to you.
• Recent colors (qr_color_history). Colors you used recently while customizing a QR code, so you can reuse them quickly.

Clearing your browser’s site data for scanmeonline.com resets your theme preference and erases your saved history and recent colors. We cannot restore any of it, because we never held a copy.

3. Analytics: Firebase Analytics (Google)

We use Google Firebase Analytics (Google Analytics 4) to understand how visitors use the website.

Firebase Analytics may collect information such as:

• Pages and screens you view
• General feature usage, for example which tool you opened
• Device and browser type
• Approximate location derived from your IP address
• Session duration and general engagement patterns

Firebase Analytics sets its own cookies, commonly prefixed _ga, to distinguish visitors and sessions. We read this information in aggregate to understand which features are useful and where the site can be improved. We do not use it to identify you personally.

Whether it runs by default depends on your region, as described in Section 6. Visitors in the EEA, UK, or Switzerland get Firebase Analytics only after allowing it. Elsewhere it runs by default and can be turned off at any time through Cookie Settings.

Google retains Analytics data according to its own retention settings. See Google’s Privacy Policy for how Google handles this data. You can also opt out of Google Analytics across all websites using the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.

4. Advertising: Google AdSense

This website may display advertisements served by Google AdSense. As with Analytics, whether the AdSense script loads by default depends on your region. See Section 6.

Google and its advertising partners may use cookies and similar technologies to:

• Deliver and display advertisements.
• Limit how many times you see the same advertisement.
• Measure advertisement performance.
• Provide personalized advertising where permitted, based on your prior activity across websites.
• Provide non-personalized or contextual advertising where personalization is not used or not permitted.
• Detect and prevent fraud or invalid traffic.

We do not control what Google’s advertising cookies collect or how long Google retains that data. Google explains this in How Google uses information from sites or apps that use our services.

You can review and adjust how Google personalizes advertisements to you, including opting out of personalization, at Google Ads Settings. Opting out does not stop advertisements from showing. It means the ones you see are no longer based on your ad-personalization profile.

5. Other Third-Party Content: Google Fonts

This site loads some fonts directly from Google Fonts. Your browser connects to Google’s servers to fetch those font files, and Google may log standard technical information such as your IP address as part of delivering them. That processing is covered by Google’s Privacy Policy and is not something we control directly.

6. Your Cookie Choices

What you see depends on your region, which we detect from your browser’s time zone. This is not a precise check. If you use a VPN or an unusual browser configuration, it may not match where you actually are.

If you are in the EEA, UK, or Switzerland:

• A cookie banner appears on your first visit and asks you to choose Accept All, Reject All, or Customize for each category. Nothing described in Sections 3 or 4 loads until you choose. Necessary storage stays on, because the site needs it to work.

Everywhere else:

• Analytics and Advertising are active from your first visit, alongside Necessary storage. You can review or turn either off at any time.

In both cases you can change your choice using the Cookie Settings link in the footer of every page. It opens a panel showing your current settings, pre-filled with your explicit choice if you made one, or with the active-by-default state if you did not.

There are also ways to control this outside the site:

• Browser settings. Most browsers let you block or delete cookies and clear local storage, either for this site alone or for all sites. Look in your browser’s privacy or settings menu.
• Google Analytics opt-out. The Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on stops Google Analytics collecting data in your browser across every site that uses it.
• Google Ads Settings.adssettings.google.com lets you review and adjust ad personalization.

Note that blocking local storage for this site also resets your theme preference and clears your saved scan and generation history, because that is the same mechanism the site uses to remember them.

7. Your Privacy Choices

Depending on where you live, you may have rights relating to cookies and tracking technologies, for example under the EU and UK GDPR and ePrivacy rules, or under California’s CCPA and CPRA. The Cookie Settings link described in Section 6 is how you exercise those choices on this website, whether or not a blocking banner applied to your visit, and you can withdraw or change your choice at any time. 8. Changes to This Disclosure

We may update this Disclosure if the cookies, analytics, or advertising technologies used on this website change. The “Last Updated” date above will change when we do.
